Winter in El Cotillo is not what most people expect — neither for better nor for worse. It is something else.
The wind exists. In December and January it can blow hard for several days in a row, especially in the afternoons. It is not a gentle Mediterranean breeze — it is the Atlantic trade wind, which comes from far away and arrives with character. Some days the northern beaches are impossible; others, they are in perfect calm. There is no way to know which will be which until dawn.
The air temperature rarely drops below 17 degrees. The sun comes out every day — or nearly every day. The winter light in the north of Fuerteventura has a special quality: lower, more golden, longer. Sunsets last longer than in summer.
Restaurants are open. The beaches are almost empty. The village returns to its own rhythm, which has nothing to do with August. For those seeking real rest, emptiness, silence with good temperatures — winter is the best season. For those who need guaranteed sun and calm sea every day, better to wait until April.
We prefer winter. But we are aware that it is not for everyone.
